Greater Egypt:
Leading the Way for Our Communities
The Greater Egypt Regional Planning & Development Commission has served Southern Illinois since 1961. We help communities, citizens, businesses, and local governments. We provide technical help and planning in Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Perry, and Williamson counties.
Greater Egypt helps with economic development, water quality, and local government services. We also manage local, state, and federal programs. Our long history shows our commitment to improving our region.
Funding Our Future:
State Support for Bike Planning
Building great bike paths requires money. The State of Illinois provides grants to help. Studies like this one, and your participation, are key to getting these funds. Illinois offers programs like:
Illinois Transportation Enhancements Program (ITEP): This program offers state and federal money for walking, biking, and trail projects. In 2025, $139.2 million was awarded. Projects can get up to $3 million.
Safe Routes to School (SRTS): This federal program helps schools and local groups create safer walking and biking routes for K-12 students. In 2025, $12 million was awarded, with no local match needed. Projects can get up to $250,000 and must be within two miles of a school.
These grants are competitive. Our detailed plans, combined with strong community support, can help us win these funds. Your input directly helps secure the money needed to build these paths.
Where Are We Going Next?
Greater Egypt and our partners are always looking for ways to improve transportation in Southern Illinois. We will keep working with local groups to find new ways to connect our communities. Our goal is to use new ideas and local input to build strong, lasting infrastructure. ITEP applications will be made for trail corridors selected by the communities.
